This study evaluates the corrosion risk of copper and copper alloy artifacts from the Momeni private collection in Buin-Miandasht, Isfahan Province. These objects, which remained in burial environments for centuries, have suffered corrosion caused by various environmental factors. A major concern is that corrosion may persist even after transfer to a museum setting, and without appropriate preventive measures, this process can ultimately lead to complete deterioration. Accordingly, this research focused on alloy composition, corrosion types and severity, corrosion products, and storage conditions in order to provide a basis for conservation and restoration strategies. A total of 21 metal objects were examined using digital loop microscopy, optical microscopy, SEM–EDS, XRD, and XRF. Environmental conditions were also monitored with a data logger. Results indicated considerable fluctuations in relative humidity: approximately 31% in July, 53% in November, 70% in February, and 67% in March–April 2024. These seasonal changes, particularly higher humidity in cold months, were recognized as a significant factor accelerating corrosion. Laboratory analyses confirmed that the artifacts were made of copper and its alloys. Cuprite was identified as the principal corrosion product in all samples, providing partial protection against further oxidation. However, the detection of copper chloride compounds in some cases highlighted the risk of ongoing active corrosion. Based on the corrosion state and environmental data, the artifacts were classified into three conservation priority levels, with some requiring immediate intervention. The findings of this research not only provide a framework for conservation planning in the Momeni collection but may also serve as a model for managing similar private and local collections across Iran. Ultimately, such approaches contribute to the safeguarding of cultural heritage and its transmission to future generations.
