Mohammad Hassan Khan Etemad al Saltaneh, whose nickname was Sani al-Dawlah, is one of the most famous Historians of the Naseri era. Etemad al Saltaneh has a New Approach in writing General History and Geography texts, and by conducting researches on the Historical Buildings and Ancient Persian Architectural Works and recording their results in his books and texts, Etemad al Saltaneh has also played a valuable role in the field of Historiography of Persian Art. Among Etemad al Saltaneh’s writings, which were written in the field of Historical Studies of Buildings and Architectural Works of Iran, Matla al-Shams is a three-volume collection which is studied and examined in the present research. Then the purpose of this study is to know and investigate the methods of Historiography of Persian Art used by Etemad al Saltaneh in this texts and how he has studied the Historical Building and Architectural Works of Mashhad city in this book collection. The research was conducted with a Qualitative Strategy and was done in an Interpretative-Historical Method. Based on the obtained results, in this book collection, in order to write the History of the formation of Mashhad city and to know about its Geographical aspects, Etemad al Saltaneh has focused above all on the artistic Medium of Architecture, Arts related to the Architecture and also the decorations. He has given a general description of the various parts of the Razavi Shrine and other Buildings and Mosques in Mashhad city, regarding the Building Components, Architectural Features, and especially the Inscriptions and the content contained in those Inscriptions. Also, by examining the Method of Studying Buildings in this book collection, it was found that Etemad al Saltaneh adopted a Historical Approach and above all sought to extract and document the background of Buildings and Historical Information hidden in their Inscriptions. As Visual Arts Aspects, including the Design, Pattern and Color of Tiling, or inlaid Motifs in the additions of the Building, such as the Pulpits of the Mosques, were of the next importance to Etemad al Saltaneh in this text. In fact, the author considered the Building and its Inscriptions as illustrated documents that contain Historical Information about places such as mosques and holy shrine in Mashhad city. In this regard, the Inscriptions have been the Main Source of Historiography of Persian Art for Etemad al Saltaneh in writing the collection of Mala al-Shams.
