Abstract: (31 Views)
The Khan School of Yazd, as one of the religious schools, has developed in three different historical periods (Zand, Qajar, and Pahlavi). This periodical development seems to be usually accompanied by different architectural features. However, the interventions made in the last few decades, with extensive changes in the appearance of the school and the elimination of historical differences, have diminished its original status. Therefore, how to achieve the integrity of the monument, while recognizing the historical differences of each period, is the main issue in the conservation of the Khan School.
For this purpose, it is necessary to extract the information available in the historical monument through field observation, speculation, layering, analysis, and then inference from evidence and documentation, and while conducting a comparative study, the different characteristics of each historical period should be determined. Also, based on a critical assessment of the entirety of this historical monument and an aesthetic analysis in order to achieve the artistic quality of the work, its integrity can be achieved.
The results show that although the Khan Yazd School consists of numerous elements, shapes, and spaces, and all of its components play a role in creating the entirety of the building, the role of some unifying elements (Char-souq, communication spaces, courtyards) has been of particular importance. The preservation and reconstruction of these unifying elements on the one hand, and the removal of additional elements (metal trusses, central courtyard facades, metal doors, etc.) and their replacement with elements and shapes appropriate to each historical period on the other, have achieved a return to the original state of the building, and the conservation process has facilitated the path to achieving the integrity of the building while accepting historical differences.
