In the architectural design process, the choice of building form is one of the most important challenges and is influenced by three key characteristics: beauty, utility, and innovation; utility and innovation rely on relatively clear rules, but beauty, due to its inherent uncertainty, is always accompanied by doubt. This ambiguity causes the influence of personal tastes and issues outside the art system on the judgment and evaluation of architectural works. In his meta-theory, Luhmann introduced beauty as a key factor in the relationship between the "social system of art" and the environment and other systems, and by this means tried to prevent other systems from dominating the art system.
Main question: How can the ambiguities arising from aesthetic uncertainty be reduced in the evaluation of architectural works?
Goal: Controlling the uncertainty of evaluating architectural works using a model derived from Luhmann's "social systems" perspective and fuzzy thinking
Method: Luhmann's view on self-creating relationship (autopoiesis) was used as the basis for extracting criteria for evaluating building form. Using the "internal relationship measurement method", the connections and effects between the criteria were examined. The "fuzzy network analysis process" was used to determine the weights of the criteria. Four monuments of contemporary Iranian architecture were evaluated based on this structure.
Results: The findings from the FANP model in examining four monuments indicated that the Mausoleum of Khayyam was successful in terms of the desired communication framework, with a definite weight of 0.363. This building, with features such as value, shape, materials, color, and formal coherence, represents a successful combination of traditional and modern Iranian architecture. Therefore, the fuzzy network process based on Luhmann's perspective can be efficient in selecting superior forms, but with the increase in criteria and pairwise comparisons, it is time-consuming and requires a software facilitator. Using this method can reduce the influence of personal tastes in evaluating architectural works and create greater stability in the evaluations.
